Critical Reviews:

Merlot

Merlot:

Two Puffs Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines - '05 Frostwatch Merlot - 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Precise, well-focused cherry-like fruit takes the lead in both the aromas and the flavors of this supple and nicely filled young Merlot, while carefully placed accents of tea-leaf and sweet oak lend a bit of engaging complexity. Full in feel, but never heavy or burdened by excessive astringency, the wine shows a real sense of polish and crafting that bodes well for keeping while at the same time making it very appealing in the more immediate term. - July 2008

90 pts. Wine Enthusiast - 04' Frostwatch Merlot - This is a wonderfully rewarding wine, rich, dry, soft and complex. The cherry, blackberry and mocha-vanilla flavors are deep and long, and the wine is totally beautiful now. - S.H., March 2007

One Puff Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines - 04' Frostwatch Merlot - Ripe cherries, creamy oak and hints of root beer spice are all part and parcel of this wine's attractive aromas, and its plush palatal impressions go hand in hand with the concentrated nature of its reasonably juicy, highly oaked flavors. High ripeness reappears in the mouth and this one is designed for those who like the full-bodied, fleshy style of Merlot. - March 2007

Chardonnay:

One Puff Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines - 05' Frostwatch Chardonnay - Elements of green apples and fresh pear are met by a careful bit of mildly vanillin oak in the restrained, but well-focused aromas of this firmly balanced youngster, and its like-minded flavors are given a boost in brightness by lots of lively acidity. It will make a fine foil to sundry shellfish dishes in the near term, and it should hold up well with age. - December 2007

90 pts. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - 04' Frostwatch Chardonnay - Pale yellow, nectarine, butterscotch, spicy oak, flowers and a leesy nuance on the nose. Round and broad yet juicy, with bright acids nicely framing concentrated citrus and leesy flavors. Offers impressive texture and enticing sweetness. Finishes intense, dusty and long. - S.T., Jan/Feb 07

 Chardonnay

88 pts. Wine Spectator - 04' Frostwatch Chardonnay - Bright and refreshing, with pretty floral scents and lively apple, pear and a touch of ginger snap peeking through on the finish giving it a measure of complexity. Drink now thru 2009. 180 cases made. - J.L., 7/31/06

89 pts. Wine Enthusiast - 04' Frostwatch Chardonnay - This is a very dry, tart Chardonnay, almost like a Fume Blanc except that it's richer and creamier. The flavors are of lemons and limes, and papayas that aren't quite ripe. It's a complex wine that will pick up interest as it warms up and plays against food. - S.H., July 2006
